There are plenty of experiences, shops, and restaurants coming soon to ONE Wheeling Town Center, but there are already a number of fun activities in Wheeling IL and the surrounding north Chicago suburbs to discover. When you call Wheeling home, you absolutely must:
Wheeling’s Restaurant Row, also known as Milwaukee Avenue, is home to countless quirky and mouth-watering eateries. Stop by the oldest joint on the block, the Superdawg Drive-In, dating back to 1948. Roll up like a character in Grease and enjoy drive-in bites, right from your car! Plus, nowhere else makes a better hot dog.
Right next door is the famous Bob Chinn’s Crab House, the highest-grossing restaurant in America. People near and far can’t get enough of Bob Chinn’s delicious seafood, and if you visit, make sure to get a Mai Tai!
With authentic Italian destinations like Tuscany Wheeling and Saranello’s, plus the cozy Rise n Dine Pancake Café, and many more destinations, the best restaurants in Wheeling IL are on Restaurant Row.
The greatest thing about living north of Chicago is the proximity to gorgeous forests and parks. Enjoy waterside picnics a short walk from Wheeling Town Center at Heritage Park, where baseball diamonds and trails make the perfect outing. Or explore the wilderness of Busse Woods in Arlington Heights, where elk roam and biking trails take you through the deep forest. And don’t miss Northbrook’s Potawatomi Woods, a 114-acre preserve that’s perfect for strolling through foliage.
There are a number of local breweries near Wheeling to explore one pint at a time. Mikerphone Brewery in Elk Grove Village serves seasonal craft beers with names inspired by song titles. Its tasting room offers snacks with the occasional food truck parked for visitors. Next check out Prairie Krafts Brewing Company in Buffalo Grove, where you can sip flights of beer in an upbeat atmosphere with live music. And for Belgian and French-style beer, stop by Une Année’s tasting room in Niles, IL for truly unique local flavors.
Keep cool on summer days at the Wheeling Aquatic Center, only a short walk from ONE Wheeling Town Center. With water slides, pools, splash pads, and swimming lessons, this is the place to be in the sun. Plus, the fun continues all year long with the center’s indoor pools and splash pad.
There are several golf courses in and around Wheeling to test your skills at, including the Chevy Chase Country Club, which recently celebrated its 90th year. Play 18 holes at the public course and finish a day on the green with a bite to eat at Gable Room Bar & Grill. For mini golf, treat yourself to the “World’s Most Unusual Golf Course” ten minutes from Wheeling Town Center at Par-King Golf Course. With a mini Mount Rushmore, a Merry-Go-Round, and an airplane on the course, it certainly is unlike any other!
Drive fifteen minutes from Wheeling Town Center to discover an entirely different shopping experience at Historic Downtown Long Grove, where charming buildings are fronted with quaint local shops. Cross under the covered bridge and peruse penny candy and antique shops, and make sure to visit annual festivals like the Chocolate Fest, Strawberry Fest, and Vintage Holidays celebration. Downtown Long Grove is especially picturesque in autumn and has been named one of Chicago’s Best Public Spaces, so make sure to visit!
